Hollis Brown Thornton

Hollis Brown Thornton (USA,1976) Dealing with themes of memory and perception, Thornton uses modern cultural artifacts ranging from family photos to pop culture imagery in order to illustrate the modern relevance of these things from the past. In the acrylic paintings, pigment transfers, and marker drawings, the use of erase face, limbo lines, outdated media, and wallpaper patterns all play key roles in uniting the fleeting present to a lingering past. Thornton currently works in a warehouse studio in Aiken, South Carolina.

"The Earth on the Back of the Giant Turtle" is a Native American myth that has been a central theme behind the artwork of Hollis Brown Thornton. This myth served as an explanation of how Earth was created and how humankind came to its present form. Although the perception of the world being carried on the back of a giant turtle seems entirely illogical in today's context, the myth still exists in our modern repertoire. The main drive of HBT's work is an exploration into the convergence of past ideas and modern sensibilities.

"The story of the earth on the back of the giant turtle is another step in the continuously developing understanding of an ever-changing reality through science and experience...

"Who are we? Where do we come from? What happens when we and the people we know die? We live in a constant state of flux and there is a prevailing sense of uncertainty about what happens next.

"The VHS, like the turtle story, represent outdated things that continue to exist, bound to us by their initial value, and now wound up in habit, nostalgia, or loyalty."
